Heather,

I already have such tremendous respect for you, for your spiritual authority (you are one of my favorite Bible teachers), and for your ministry to NCC, but this just quadruples my respect for you. With all of your responsibilities within NCC, the fact that you took actual time out to pour truth into Michelle's life is just a beautiful picture of how our God would leave the 99 to come for the 1. Thanks for not only leading and preaching discipleship but for demonstrating and living discipleship.

I can't wait to read more! I am certainly not a teenager, my youngest only has a year and a half left in that time frame, but I find myself increasingly interested and asking theological questions. As someone who "cut her teeth" on church pews I know what I believe., I have just recently begun hearing terms and titles in the Christian community that were never used or a part of our teaching in our local church. Now that I have been exposed to these topics I want to know more and this book looks like a great place to begin. I wish we still lived in the area, I might pretend to be a teenager just to be able to be have you disciple me. :-)

It's funny what "knowing" and knowing are.

I taught a kid to shoot a basketball in Ethiopia, and I'm probably far worse at it than you are. But simple things like using your right hand to flick the ball and your left hand as a guide are revolutionary when you're just chucking it at the basket.

Which kinda reminds me of Andy Stanley's talk at Catalyst about just teaching what you know, not needing to have all of the answers.

Okay, I don't know how related this actually is to your post other than it's about teaching someone to shoot a basketball :)

[...] Heather Zempel has some terrifically insightful words that we should heed. “In some strange turn of the tide, it seems that Christians often persecute themselves these days. We flee from the potential pollution of “the world,” sequester ourselves and the Gospel inside the walls of our safety bubbles and render ourselves impotent and ineffective. We stop doing things that are hard because we fail to realize that significant things are always hard. We seek peace instead of taking the Prince of Peace into turbulent places. We pray prayers that revolve around our comfort and stability. The Comforter isn’t needed unless we are in uncomfortable places. [...]

Great thoughts Heather. As an application point of your post :) I'm looking forward to meeting you at the small group pastor lunch on Thursday.

By the way, my wife is an actress....I got a kick out of reading your bio and realizing that you and I have that in common.

Just wanted to say how thankful I am for your background. I think it gives you a different and enlightening perspective on many topics.

We were just talking in small group about how a couple that had been involved with ministry for 30 years had never heard wrath and grace connected like that and how thankful they were for the message.

Love your vulnerability here, Heather. Thanks for stepping out and being honest like this.

I struggle with these things, too. One little off-handed comment can have me questioning my whole call to ministry...it's ridiculous, really. It reminds me that I still desperately need God...and that I need to desperately ground myself in who Christ says I am.

Hi Heather, I read your blog from time to time and really enjoyed the carrot tale. I'm a Pastor and over the last few days have had some discouraging thoughts and circumstances, and then I read your blog and gained a different and much better perspective on being buried alive. I know that God has His purpose and my part is to wait and trust. Thanks a lot.

Me too. We are kindred fallers - or something...

Sunday night, I fell down the stairs in my own house. The ones I walk down every day. The carpeted ones with excellent traction. I flung myself around the corner 2 steps too soon. My knee is swollen and rug burned. My cell phone went flying and my friend on the phone didn't even seem remotely surprised that I had flung the phone because she lived with me for 3 years and she is used to me stumbling and breaking things/myself... So, there you go. Thanks for letting us laugh at you, please laugh back. I feel like it makes the falls all worth while if they bring some joy.

Thanks Heather; This is right on point! I have always said that our faith is not designed to exempt us from trouble, but rather to sustain us in the time of trouble. This is where the grace, strength, and love of God become paramount. By knowing that all things are working together for our good, gives us the assurance that God's sovereignty secures our destiny. God indeed has plans for us, but those plans are not 'about' us, but are 'about' HIM! They are HIS plans for us! This is where are theology get's twisted, because we want to believe that God's plans are for us and 'about' us! Yet the scriptures are replete of accounts where peoples' and person's journeys were so much more about God than them. 'Everything will be okay, because God is in control! Hopefully, I'm 'okay' with that!
Thanks! (I will be borrowing this for my weekly pastoral reflection!)

My first reaction was that it wasn't really a lie to say it's going to be okay. You're absolutely right that God didn't promise us flower filled days and restful nights. Life can be tough - and I think sometimes it's tougher for those "called according to his purpose" because we're essentially setting ourselves up as targets in a spiritual sense.

But I don't think it's a lie to say it's going to be okay because of the first part of that verse: "all things work together for good." It IS going to be alright because even though we might not LIKE the path we're walking, if we're walking in faith and seeking God's will it WILL be okay ultimately. We may have to walk through the fire to reach the good. We may have to die to reach the good. But if we're walking in faith and salvation, we WILL reach the good.

I don't disagree, however, with your ultimate point that we can't be lazy in our faith - or in our support for each other. "Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." It's the LAW that we should be doing this. So yeah, throw the fuzzy bunnies out the window. It could be a bumpy ride for all of us.

Great post...I've thought of that many times. I thought Jesus promised, "In this world you will have troubles." The good news is as you've said, at the end it will be ok. Not always now though. Thanks for sharing these thoughts.

This reminds me of the video when Matt Chandler shared the news regarding his cancer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMerKVKssQU

Every encounter, relationship, struggle, is an opportunity to learn and grow. If it's difficult, she should probably stick with it. If it's damaging, yes, getting out would probably be best...there are certainly other learning opportunities out there...

Well said.
I don't think I would advocate for her either way. This is something that Abba needs to show her in His way if she is willing to listen. But in my humble opinion, she should say. Sometimes in the midst of angst is when the most good is done.....both in refining your own personal character and in being there to lead and be a positive influence for the other people with whom you are walking through the tough experience.
Well said, PZ.

Thanks for this. Surprisingly, there is a lot of enthnocentricity in my line of work. It makes me wonder why people want to leave home when all they do is complain how where they are or how they live isn't like home. So bizarre to me. Anyway, missing you. So glad you were soaking up every moment of where you were and for the great insight and reminder to us all that God does indeed love us idiots :)
